Guwahati, June 18 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that BJP MLA Dr Habbe Terron will be the ruling alliance’s candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly.
Taking to social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Sarma said that Dr. Terone, MLA from Amri (ST) constituency, has been nominated for this constitutional post. He expressed confidence that he would strengthen the voice of tribal communities in the legislative process.
CM Sarma said that Dr. Terone is a medical professional by profession and is the first representative elected from the recently formed Amri assembly constituency. He said that these MLAs represent the aspirations of the tribal communities of Assam and will further increase the representation of the hill districts in the state assembly.

The Chief Minister also wished the MLA all the best for the upcoming elections for the post of Deputy Speaker.
Meanwhile, while talking to the media, Dr. Habbe Teron also expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister on his nomination for the post of Vice President. He said that I express my heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for nominating me on behalf of NDA for the post of Deputy Speaker. I will discharge my responsibilities with full dedication and to the best of my ability. I am proud of myself and my people. I am extremely happy and grateful to receive this important responsibility. I will perform my duties with full devotion, dedication and honesty and will try my best to work as per the provisions of the Constitution. It is a positive message that the BJP led government is working for all sections and communities.
Dr Teron’s candidature also assumes significance as he hails from the tribal-dominated hill region and represents the recently created Amri (ST) constituency. His coming to this post is being seen as a step to ensure greater participation of indigenous and tribal communities in the functioning of the Assembly.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a comfortable majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly, so Dr. Tarone’s election to this post is being considered a mere formality.
