There was a heated debate in the Lok Sabha between Home Minister Amit Shah and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Amit Shah was speaking on the issue of electoral reforms when Rahul Gandhi interrupted him. Shah gave a sharp reply and said that the Parliament would not run as per Gandhi’s wishes.
Amit Shah said that opposition leaders claim that the voter list is wrong and it needs to be corrected. He asked, “So what is SIR (Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation Programme)? Whether the voter list is old or new, your defeat is certain. When you win, the Election Commission is great; when you lose, the Election Commission becomes BJP’s. Two voter cards? These are common mistakes. You could not remove the votes, that is why there are voter cards at two places. SIR is meant to correct this.”

The Home Minister continued his speech. He said, “Let me tell you what vote theft is. You become a voter even though you are not eligible. Winning elections through unethical means. When you disregard the people’s mandate, it is called vote theft. The first case of vote theft was committed by Nehru. Patel got 28 votes and Nehru got 2 votes. The Allahabad High Court ruled that Mrs. Gandhi had not won the election in a fair manner. To hide it, a law was brought in Which gave her power. A controversy has reached the Delhi Court: How did Sonia become a voter before becoming a citizen?”
