New Delhi, July 17 (IANS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana on Friday. With this, India will join the select group of countries which are working towards using hydrogen for clean rail transport.
Operation of hydrogen train between Jind and Sonipat is a major achievement of Indian Railways. The project reflects Railways’ commitment towards innovation, energy efficiency and environment friendly transportation. Also, it will prove helpful in achieving the goals of clean energy and net-zero carbon emissions.
Jind-Sonipat section has been selected as the pilot route for these operations. An indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been built in Jind for the train. The Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization has granted the necessary licenses for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas at the site.
With the launch of hydrogen-powered trains, India joins the list of select countries like Germany, Japan, China and the US that are working on the use of hydrogen for clean rail transport. According to a government statement, the technology is still in its early stages, so very few countries are currently running or testing such systems.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through chemical reaction using hydrogen and only water vapor is released. Because of this, it is a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuel systems. Hydrogen-based rail systems are increasingly being recognized around the world as a good solution for sustainable transport.
A hydrogen compression system has been installed for refueling purposes. Additionally, necessary technical support and necessary spare parts are also provided to ensure reliable and safe operation. Arrangements for a standby compressor unit are also being made.
Additionally, according to an official statement from the Madhya Pradesh government, Prime Minister Modi will virtually inaugurate the revamped Tikamgarh railway station under the Centre’s ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will attend the program to be held in Tikamgarh and will participate in the inauguration ceremony of the railway station.
