Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress after the opposition voted against the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, saying women in West Bengal are challenging the ‘Mahajungle Raj’.

Addressing the BJP’s election rally in Bishnupur, Prime Minister Modi described the repeal of the amendments in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act as a “conspiracy” by TMC and Congress. He alleged that TMC has betrayed the women of West Bengal.

Calling Mamata Banerjee’s government a “ruthless government”, the Prime Minister said, “This atmosphere, excitement, love and enthusiasm is a symbol of anger against ‘Nirmam Sarkar’ (cruel government). This is the sacred land of Maa Sharda and many women are present here. BJP is associated with the empowerment and security of women, that is why women bless BJP the most. We want the role of daughters to expand in building a developed India. We want more and more women to participate in politics. Take it.”

He further said, “However, you saw what happened in Parliament. TMC once again betrayed the sisters of Bengal. Women wanted 33 percent seats.”

PM Modi said, “There was talk of reservation, and Modi ensured it. Bengal wanted it to be implemented from 2029. But TMC did not want women to become MLAs and MPs in large numbers, because women are challenging their ‘Mahajungle Raj’. TMC conspired with Congress and they did not allow the Women’s Reservation Bill to be passed.”

Further, citing BJP’s election agenda, he accused TMC of breaking laws to benefit illegal immigrants.

Prime Minister Modi said, “TMC violates all laws to benefit infiltrators. TMC is giving reservation on the basis of religion, thereby strangulating the spirit of the Constitution.”

Recalling the controversy surrounding President Draupadi Murmu’s visit to West Bengal for the Ninth International Santhal Conference, Prime Minister Modi said, “Today the whole world respects President Draupadi Murmu ji, but the anti-tribal TMC insults her. Here in Bengal, when Rashtrapati ji came, the entire country saw how TMC insulted her. The sisters of Bengal will never forget this insult of the President.”

This comment of Prime Minister Modi came after the opposition parties in the Lok Sabha on Friday voted against the Constitution Amendment Bill. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill were brought together for passage in the Lok Sabha. After the debate on the three bills, in the voting on the Constitution Amendment Bill, 298 members voted in favor and 230 members voted against.

A large majority of women vote in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s TMC. Both BJP and TMC are trying to woo women voters ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Announcing the Laxmi Bhandar scheme, TMC said that general category women will get Rs 1,500 per month, SC/ST women will get Rs 1,700 and unemployed youth will get Rs 1,500 as pocket money.

Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, and counting of votes will take place on May 4.

While Mamata Banerjee is hoping to come to power for the fourth consecutive time, the BJP, which had touched the mark of 77 seats in the last elections, is trying to win this time.
