Chandigarh, June 19 (IANS). Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday laid the foundation stone of 37.93 km long Dhussi Dam Link Road Project in Jalandhar district to be built at a cost of Rs 61.82 crore. This project will provide a permanent solution to the decades-long flood problem in the Satluj area.
The project, connecting the Shahkot-Moga-Rampur road to the Gidderpindi Dhussi Dam, has been designed to act as both an important road corridor and a flood protection wall. Thousands of families in 15 villages will benefit from this.
Apart from saving residents from frequent floods, the project will reduce traffic jams on the main road network, boost economic activities and further strengthen the state’s fast-growing infrastructure as part of the government’s ongoing drive to build world-class roads.
Rajya Sabha MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and others were also present on this occasion.
Addressing the gathering, CM Mann said that the total length of this important road to be built on the banks of Sutlej river will be 37.93 kilometers.
He said that our government has sanctioned Rs 61.82 crore for this big infrastructure project. People living in Shahkot and Lohian areas have been living under the constant threat of floods for decades. Previous governments made big promises during elections, but ignored the infrastructure needs of this rural area.
The Chief Minister said that his government believes in delivering results instead of just making false promises. He said that he himself has seen the difficulties of the people of this area, when the villages were cut off from other places during the rainy season.
He said that the construction of this road on Dhussi Dam will further strengthen the embankment along the Sutlej River and will act as a strong protective shield for the local population against flood related hazards.
The CM said that this road will provide a lot of convenience in daily commuting to about 15,000-16,000 residents living in about 15 villages of the area. It will connect Shahkot-Moga Road with Lohian-Makhu Road and will act as an effective bypass, significantly reducing traffic jams on the existing route.
During monsoon, this road will prove to be a boon for farmers, school buses and common people as it will allow easy movement without any hindrance.
