Chennai, February 17 (IANS). Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday attacked the state government, calling the interim budget for 2026-27 a ‘mirage’. The party alleged that this budget is going to push Tamil Nadu further into debt, ignoring the welfare of the people.
Taking aim at the state government, Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson ANS Prasad said the budget presented by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin does not contain concrete and planned developmental initiatives in important sectors like finance, economy, industry and public welfare.
Prasad alleged that the government was repeatedly claiming double-digit economic growth, but it was of no benefit to the common citizens. He said that this development has mainly been in favor of the leaders, party officials and elected representatives involved in the governance system, while a large section of the society has to struggle.
The BJP spokesperson said that in the last five years, the government did not respond to the persistent demands and protests raised by teachers, doctors, engineers, farmers, disabled, nurses, road workers and Anganwadi workers.
He questioned the lack of detailed information on the North Chennai Development Project and the lack of clarity in allocation for cleaning Chennai’s Koova River.
The government was also accused of not making any concrete announcement to remove encroachment from water bodies, even though the court has made several comments on this issue.
Regarding the increasing debt burden of the state, Prasad also asked what is the status of the expert committee allegedly formed to increase revenue and ensure financial stability. He alleged that the state was heading towards unsustainable debt path and the Chief Minister needed to give a clear answer.
Terming the budget as ‘anti-people’, the BJP said the DMK government has failed to fulfill the promises made in the last assembly elections and has disappointed many sections.
