Telangana civic elections: Congress captures 84 out of 105 municipalities, lead in 6 out of 7 corporations too

Hyderabad, February 16 (IANS). The ruling Congress registered a massive victory in the recently concluded municipal elections in Telangana, capturing 84 out of 105 municipalities. Apart from this, Congress supported candidates have also won the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in six out of seven municipal corporations.

Voting was held for 116 municipalities and 7 municipal corporations on 11 February, while the results were declared on 13 February. However, in 11 municipalities, the newly elected councilors could not elect the president and vice-president.

The main opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won power in 17 municipalities, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won one municipality. Independent candidates were elected president in three municipalities.

The Congress got a clear majority in 66 municipalities, while in 18 other municipalities it got the posts of president and vice president with the support of other parties and independents. Interestingly, Congress got the support of BJP in two municipalities. In Narsapur municipality of Medak district, BJP supported Congress for the post of president, in return Congress helped a BJP councilor get elected as vice president. A similar agreement was also reached in Aliabad of Medchal Malkajgiri district.

Whereas in Amangal in Rangareddy district, BRS won the post of President with the support of BJP and supported BJP for the post of Vice President.

Talking about municipal corporations, Congress captured both the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Nalgonda and Ramagundam municipal corporations. In Kothagudem Municipal Corporation, Congress’s ally CPI’s Mood Ganesh was elected mayor, while Congress’s S. Lalita Kumar became the deputy mayor. Here, Congress and CPI had got 22-22 seats in the 60-member corporation.

Congress’s K in Nizamabad Municipal Corporation. Uma Rani was elected mayor with the support of AIMIM, while Salma Tahseen of AIMIM became the deputy mayor. With this, Congress was successful in stopping BJP, which had emerged as the largest party.

However, Congress could not stop BJP in Karimnagar Municipal Corporation. The BJP, which won 30 seats in the 66-member corporation, secured the posts of mayor and deputy mayor with the support of independents.

In Adilabad Municipality, independent councilor Bandari Anusha was elected president, while AIMIM’s Mohammad Rohit became the vice president. Here BJP became the largest party with 21 seats, while Congress got 11, BRS and AIMIM got six seats each. Five independents were also elected. In Bhainsa Municipality also, independents won both the posts of President and Vice President.
