Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary, which is celebrated as Children’s Day. PM Modi recalled his role in the freedom movement and his contribution during the formative years of the nation.
In a message shared on Twitter today, the Prime Minister said, “Today we are celebrating the 125th birth anniversary of our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. I pay my tribute to him. We remember the efforts of Pandit Nehru during the freedom struggle and his role as the first Prime Minister of India.”
Nehru, affectionately known as “Chacha Nehru”, was a major figure in India’s freedom struggle and played a significant role in shaping the country’s future. His ideals of democracy, secularism and scientific thinking still inspire Indians.
One of the leading figures of India’s independence movement, Nehru remains an important personality in the country’s political history. As the first Prime Minister after independence, he led the nation in its early years and laid the foundation for parliamentary democracy, scientific progress and industrial development.
His vision for modern India is still cited in discussions related to nation building, education and institutional development.
The 125th birth anniversary holds special significance, inspiring fresh public reflection on his ideals, especially his emphasis on secularism, democracy and promotion of scientific temper among citizens.
Historians and scholars have noted that Nehru’s leadership fundamentally shaped India’s domestic and foreign policies during the transition from colonial rule to a sovereign republic.
While the nation remembers Nehru’s legacy, the Prime Minister’s tribute underlines the continued recognition of his contribution to India’s development and the long-term impact of his early leadership on the country’s democratic institutions and national identity.
