Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged all political parties to forget their differences and support the amendment in the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.

She stressed that as Lok Sabha voting approaches, “millions of women have their eyes set on Parliament”.

Prime Minister Modi said that the debate lasted till late night and the concerns, misunderstandings and lack of information existing among the members were comprehensively addressed.

In a post on Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Currently a discussion is going on in the Parliament on the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. The debate continued till 1 am last night. Reasonable answers have been given to clear the misconceptions spread. Every apprehension has been addressed. Every member has also been provided with the information which was lacking. Any issue that might create conflict in anyone’s mind has also been resolved.”

Prime Minister Modi said the decades-long political delay on women’s reservation must end and urged all parties to support amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and ensure greater representation for women as the Lok Sabha elections approach.

The post read, “The issue of women’s reservation has been heavily politicized in the country for four decades. Now the time has come that half of the country’s population should definitely get their rights. It is not fair that even after so many decades of independence, Indian women have so little representation in the decision-making process.”

The post further read, “Voting in the Lok Sabha is going to take place in a short while. I urge all the political parties. My appeal is… please take the decision with full sensitivity and thoughtfulness and vote in favor of women’s reservation. On behalf of the women’s power of the country, I request all the members. Please do not do anything that will hurt the sentiments of the women’s power. The eyes of millions of women of the country are fixed on all of us, on our intentions, on our decisions. Please support the amendment in Nari Shakti Vandan Act.”

The Lok Sabha is continuing discussion and voting on the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures.

Besides, voting is also taking place on the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which extends it to Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. Also, voting is taking place on the Delimitation Bill, which seeks to increase the number of Lok Sabha constituencies to 850.
