Speaker Om Birla on Friday adjourned the Lok Sabha sine die after Vande Mataram was played in the House amid opposition protests against the passage of the Vikas Bharat-Ji Ram Ji Bill.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned yesterday from a three-nation visit, was present in the House today.

Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan adjourned the House shortly after it resumed at 11 am today. Statements and reports were laid before the House before adjournment.

Adjourning the Rajya Sabha sine die, Radhakrishnan said, “The conduct of members during the minister’s reply yesterday, which included protesting and tearing papers, was unbecoming of the House, and I wish them to reconsider their behaviour.”

The Chairman also said that “the session was very productive, and he hoped that there would be more fruitful discussions in future sessions.”

Meanwhile, the opposition continued its vocal protest against the passage of the Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill. On Friday, the united opposition protested outside Parliament, while Trinamool Congress members continued their protest on the steps of the House entrance.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who is currently in Germany, also joined the criticism of the bill, terming it deliberately “anti-state” and “anti-village”.

Rahul Gandhi wrote in a post on Twitter, “Last night, the Modi government dismantled the 20-year MGNREGA scheme in a single day. VB-G-RAM-G is not a ‘restructuring’ of MGNREGA. It dismantles rights-based, demand-driven guarantees and turns it into a ration scheme controlled from Delhi. It is deliberately anti-state and anti-village.”

He said the previous scheme empowered rural workers and strengthened rural livelihoods.

A day before the last day of the winter session on December 18, 2025, Parliament passed the VB-G RAMG Bill. After the approval of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha also passed it.

The Bill ensures 125 days of wage employment to every adult member of a rural household willing to do unskilled manual labour, instead of the existing 100 days.
