Aizawl, January 29 (IANS). Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday once again appealed to the youth and all sections of the society to stay away from addiction and actively lead the fight against the growing drug menace.

Inaugurating the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mizoram Group Headquarters in Aizawl, the Chief Minister expressed deep concern over the increasing drug abuse among the youth and said it was extremely important to protect them from such deadly influences.

He said that disciplined, capable and committed youth should be provided wide opportunities to showcase their talent and skills. Keeping these objectives in mind, the state government has decided to establish its own separate NCC Group Headquarters.

The Chief Minister said that last year, the Mizoram government had launched a four-month special campaign between September to December 2025, aimed at curbing drug trafficking from outside the state, especially from Myanmar. The campaign was carried out by the state police in collaboration with the Excise and Narcotics Department and the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the state’s largest civic body, and awareness programs were also organised.

After the brief inaugural programme, the Chief Minister also held a meeting with ministers and senior NCC officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Lalduhoma recalled the efforts made for setting up the NCC Group Headquarters in Mizoram and expressed hope that the youth of the state will actively participate in NCC activities and use this platform for positive character building.

With this new development, Mizoram NCC, which earlier operated under Assam, will now function under its own dedicated Group Headquarters.

Major General Anurag Vij, Additional Director General, North-Eastern Region, NCC, said that the objective of NCC is to train the youth as disciplined, courageous and responsible citizens, so that they can contribute positively to the nation, society and family and stay away from drugs and unhealthy lifestyle.

He said that whenever the state government starts programs related to these objectives, NCC is ready to provide full cooperation.

Major General Vij also said that the youth of North-East India are disciplined and capable, but are often considered less connected than other parts of the country. To change this perception, NCC is planning to give the youth more contact and experience with the people of other states, so that mutual understanding and unity can be strengthened.

On the issue of infrastructure, NCC officials stressed the need for suitable housing and said that NCC could develop its own buildings and facilities if the state government made land available. This land can also be given on long term lease instead of permanent transfer.

At present there are four NCC units in Mizoram, comprising about 8,000 cadets. After the establishment of the Group Headquarters, further expansion of NCC activities in the state is expected.
