New Delhi, December 26 (IANS). The kind of situation prevailing in Bangladesh and the violent incidents that are coming to light have tarnished the image of Yunus’s interim government. Direct questions are being raised regarding law and order in Yunus’s government. Meanwhile, in an effort to improve his tarnished image, Yunus’ special assistant Khuda Baksh Chaudhary tendered his resignation, which has been accepted.
In a recent case, another youth from the minority Hindu community of Bangladesh was killed by the mob. On Wednesday, the case of murder of Hindu youth Amrit Mandol has come to light. According to the police, Amrit Mandal, also known as Samrat, was a money extortionist in Rajbari district. Amrit was allegedly attacked by the mob when he had gone to demand recovery money. Police said there were no clear indications whether he was targeted because of his religion. At the same time, discussions are also going on about his alleged connection with India and ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Choudhary’s resignation was accepted soon after. One thing has become clear from this that the government’s intention is to hold guilty the people involved in maintaining law and order. This step has definitely given some relief to the Yunus government from the criticism it is facing due to the murder of two Hindu youths within a week.
The killing occurred amid unrest following the death of Osman Hadi. Hadi was one of those who led the movement against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year. He was a student-turned-politician, and was shot dead by miscreants.
Deepu, a 27-year-old Hindu textile worker, was killed by a mob in Bhaluka on charges of blasphemy. He was beaten badly. Authorities condemned the killing and arrested several suspects, but the incident demonstrated the weakness of minorities and the dangers of violence fueled by unchecked rumors in times of political unrest.
On the other hand, several criminal cases including murder were pending against the emperor. Local reports quoted villagers as saying that he was part of a gang and was hiding somewhere in India after the August 2024 rebellion that ousted Hasina from power.
However, it was not clear why he decided to return and commit the crime again under the current circumstances. Khuda Baksh Chaudhary was the first Inspector General of Police (IGP). However, he was made special assistant to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on November 10 last year.
He was appointed after last year’s major insurgency with the expectation that he would play a key role in restoring discipline and boosting morale among law enforcement agencies, especially the police, The Daily Star quoted senior officials as saying without naming them.
He claimed that he had to resign due to his inability to perform as per expectations and shortcomings in crisis management.
