Rewa, May 24 (IANS). The Jain community across India has expressed deep grief and anger after a tragic road accident in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. Two Jain sadhus lost their lives while a third sadhvi was seriously injured in the accident. Angered by the incident, the Jain community has announced a series of peaceful protests on May 25 demanding justice and better safety measures for Jain sadhus. This heart-wrenching accident took place on the morning of May 20 near the Collectorate in Civil Lines area of Rewa. A speeding car crushed three Jain nuns who were on a religious pilgrimage.
Shrutamati Mata, a native of Sagar district and a disciple of Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj, died on the spot. The other two sadhvis, Upsamiti Mata of Tamil Nadu and Arika Mata of Jabalpur, were seriously injured and were immediately taken to hospital. One of them was kept on ventilator support while the other Sadhvi died during treatment.
Driver Rashid Ali Shah fled from the spot after the accident but was later caught by the police near Jabalpur after a chase of about 270 kilometers. In the video footage that surfaced on various media platforms, it can be clearly seen that the car suddenly turned from the middle of the road and moved straight towards the sadhis who were walking on the side of the road. Indian justice against the accused driver on charges of speeding, careless driving and ‘hit-and-run’ A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Code. Police have confirmed that the vehicle was returning from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh to Nagpur in Maharashtra. The Jain community has been deeply shocked by this incident.
Many members of the community have raised doubts as to whether the accident was indeed unintentional. Some have called for a thorough investigation to rule out any possible conspiracy. In response, Jain organizations have called for peaceful protests and marches in Bhopal, Indore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and other major cities on 25 May.
While appealing for peace, community leaders have stressed the need to ensure accountability and enhance security for Jain monks and nuns who travel barefoot as part of their religious practices. Several senior Jain saints, including Muni Shri Praman Sagar Ji, have issued messages urging the community to maintain patience, faith and restraint in these difficult times. Rajya Sabha member Naveen Jain has also expressed his condolences and solidarity with the bereaved community.
Madhya Pradesh government has assured strict action against the accused. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the insecurity of Jain monks on public roads and the growing concerns over road safety in the state. As preparations for the protests gain momentum, the entire Jain community has come together to demand justice for the departed souls and safety of their religious leaders. A large number of people are expected to participate in these peaceful protests, which will reflect the collective anger and determination of the community.
