Mumbai, February 23 (IANS). Bharti Airtel on Monday announced that it will invest Rs 20,000 crore over the next few years to expand its digital lending business through its non-banking finance company (NBFC) arm Airtel Money Ltd.
The telecom company said that this new investment will strengthen its presence in India’s fast-growing financial services sector and help in reducing the credit gap existing in the country.
Of the total investment of Rs 20,000 crore, 70 percent will be invested by Airtel itself, while the remaining 30 percent will be brought in through promoter group Bharti Enterprises Limited.
Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman, Bharti Airtel, said the success of the company’s lending platform shows that it has been able to effectively combine technology, data and customer trust at scale.
“Our NBFC expansion further builds on this strong foundation and reflects our vision to build a future-ready digital lending business based on trust, innovation and financial inclusion,” he said.
Airtel Money Limited has received NBFC license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 13 February 2026.
The company said the move is a strategic expansion towards deepening financial inclusion and providing simple, secure and innovative digital financial services to customers across the country.
Over the last two years, Airtel has built a digital lending platform, through which loans worth more than Rs 9,000 crore have been disbursed so far.
The company said its Lending Service Provider (LSP) model has achieved strong growth due to a disciplined underwriting process, better portfolio management and real-time risk monitoring.
It also said that its digital platform equipped with data and analytics engines supported by over 500 data scientists has been able to expand at a fast pace, while loan performance also remains satisfactory.
As part of regulatory requirements, Airtel Money clarified that it has received a certificate of registration under the RBI Act, but the central bank does not guarantee the financial position of the company or the repayment of its liabilities.
