Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have become a big part of children’s lives. However, concerns are increasing regarding their increasing use. Considering the impact it has on the mental health of children, the Bihar government has started preparing a concrete policy regarding screen time.
During the assembly session, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said that the issue is being worked on seriously. The government has sought a detailed report from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. This report will analyze the impact of children’s increasing screen time, use of social media and online gaming.
The government believes that this is not a matter of just one department, but a multi-sectoral issue, in which education, health and parents will also play an important role. After receiving the report, a comprehensive policy will be drafted after discussion with various stakeholders.
This issue was raised by JDU MLA Samriddh Verma in the assembly. Citing the Economic Survey 2025-26, he had raised questions about the adverse effects of social media and health problems on children. In response, the Deputy Chief Minister made it clear that the government is taking policy steps in this direction.
Similar debates are gaining momentum in other parts of the country also. There is already a demand for a law to control children’s social media use in Goa. At the international level, Australia last year imposed strict restrictions on social media use by children under 16 years of age.
If Bihar implements a policy regulating screen time, it could set an example for other states. Experts say that addiction to social media and online gaming can have a serious impact on the mental health of children. Many cases have come to light in recent years, which show the seriousness of this issue.
