Vodafone Idea has launched CNAP i.e. Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) facility in the telecom sector to curb fraudulent calls. After Vodafone Idea, other telecom companies are also preparing to implement it in various areas. The Department of Telecommunications has directed all telecom companies to implement CNAP by March 31, 2026.
What is CNAP?
As the name implies, calling name presentation means displaying the name of the incoming caller on the phone. The Department of Telecommunications has been recommending this for a long time. Telecom companies have been directed to implement CNAP soon to curb fraudulent calls coming from unknown numbers. CNAP displays the caller’s name on incoming calls. This service works just like Truecaller or other name displaying apps, but it will display the name from the KYC document provided while purchasing the SIM. The real name of the person purchasing the connection appears in the KYC document. This makes it easier to identify fake callers.
Rollout by March 31, 2026
According to a PTI report, the Department of Telecommunications said that Vodafone Idea has started this service in Haryana Telecom Circle. Jio is also going to start this service in Haryana soon. Telecom companies have decided to launch CNAP in one circle for the time being. After the completion of the trial, this service will be launched across India. The Department of Telecommunications has set the deadline as March 31, 2026.
Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) last year suggested CNAP to curb fraudulent calls. After this, the Department of Telecommunications sought their opinion on this proposal from the telecom companies. However, telecom companies said this could violate users’ privacy. After this, telecom companies have started working on a pilot project to launch this service.
