New Delhi, February 28 (IANS). The Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association (ISA) on Saturday congratulated the government and US-based Micron Technology on the inauguration of a state-of-the-art ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Sanand, Gujarat.
Describing the event as an important milestone in India’s semiconductor journey, IESA President Ashok Chandak, who was present at the inauguration ceremony, said, “This is not just the inauguration of a plant, but a declaration of India’s emergence as a strong and trusted player in advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing.”
He said, “It is a matter of pride to have the opportunity to witness history firsthand. In the Prime Minister’s three words – ‘India is ready, India is trustworthy and India delivers’ – everything became clear. It was a powerful declaration of the nation’s confidence in building a world-class chip ecosystem.”
Micron’s investment of Rs 22,516 crore (about $2.75 billion) is one of the largest investments by a global semiconductor company in India’s manufacturing sector. Apart from this, the company also has design centers in India.
The plant will manufacture products such as DRAM, NAND and solid-state drives (SSD). These critical memory devices power AI systems, high-performance computing, smartphones, data centers, automotive electronics, and next-generation digital infrastructure.
Memory manufacturing is extremely important from a strategic point of view, as only a few countries in the world have this capability.
“Given the accelerating demand and supply pressures associated with AI, setting up memory manufacturing in India is a timely and transformative step,” the association said.
This memory plant, combined with Micron’s existing design centers and other chip assembly and test facilities coming up this year, will expand India’s semiconductor capacity manifold. This will also strengthen design based manufacturing and export possibilities.
The plant located in Sanand is expected to create approximately 5,000 direct and over 15,000 indirect employment opportunities, creating a skilled semiconductor workforce.
The commissioning of Micron’s ATMP plant is considered a major success in putting India’s semiconductor policy into practice and becoming manufacturing ready.
