New Delhi, November 22 (IANS). According to the information given by the Railway Ministry on Saturday, the freight performance of Indian Railways is strengthening the economic structure of the country, with the total loading crossing the 1 billion tonne mark and reaching 1020 million tonnes till November 19 this year.
According to official information, coal has emerged as the largest contributor with 505 million tonnes. This is followed by 115 million tonnes of iron ore, 92 million tonnes of cement, 59 million tonnes of container traffic, 47 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel, 42 million tonnes of fertiliser, 32 million tonnes of mineral oil, 30 million tonnes of food grains, about 20 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants and 74 million tonnes of other commodities.
Daily loading was recorded at a strong figure of 4.4 million tonnes, higher than last year’s figure of 4.2 million tonnes. This growth reflects improvements in operational efficiency and sustained demand.
According to the ministry, freight loading between April to October this year further consolidates this positive progress, which is projected to reach 935.1 million tonnes in 2025, compared to 906.9 million tonnes recorded in the same period last year, showing an impressive year-on-year growth.
This continued momentum along with improving daily loading rates reflects the ability of Indian Railways to support India’s industrial expansion and infrastructure development.
The official statement said that shifting the movement of bulk goods to rail has benefits beyond commercial standards. It helps in reducing carbon emissions. Reduces congestion on highways and provides access to green logistics solutions to industries including MSMEs. These developments reaffirm India’s commitment to sustainable development.
