Srinagar, April 14 (IANS). Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam on Tuesday registered an FIR against a person for running a fake WhatsApp account in the name of Senior Superintendent of Police (SAP).
The police officer said that Budgam police station had received credible information that Sameer Ali Bhat, resident of Pallar Budgam, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, SSP Budgam, was distributing screenshots of chats among the general public from a fake WhatsApp account running in the name of SSP Budgam and was posing as a close associate of the top police officer to influence people.
Upon investigation, it was found that the said person was involved in several FIRs and was running a fake WhatsApp account in the name of SSP Budgam using mobile number +91-9622126997.
He was also sharing screenshots of the conversations so as to exercise undue influence by posing as a close associate of the SSP.
In Jammu and Kashmir, like other parts of the country, cyber crimes, online frauds and scams have increased due to the widespread use of internet and social media. While on one hand this facility provides immense benefits to the common man, on the other hand it also poses a serious challenge to law enforcement agencies.
Misuse of social media for anti-national and criminal purposes is the basis of cyber crimes in Jammu and Kashmir. Acting promptly on this information, Budgam Police Station has registered FIR No. 90/2026 under Section 319 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act.
Budgam Police has advised the general public to remain alert and not fall victim to such fraudulent attempts.
Citizens have been requested to use only the official contact numbers available on the official website to contact police officials and other government departments.
The public is also requested to immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station so that timely legal action can be taken.
