New Delhi, January 9 (IANS). National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education has launched ‘NHAI Internship Programme’. The objective of this initiative is to give real work experience to the youth and students in the country’s largest National Highway Development System, so that they can become good professionals in the future.

Along with this, NHAI has also started a special internship portal. This portal will provide internship opportunities in more than 150 ongoing National Highway projects across the country. Each project will take on a maximum of four interns, giving opportunities to approximately 600 students.

Students from IIT, NIT and AICTE affiliated institutions will be able to participate in this internship program. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this program will give students practical knowledge along with studies.

One month, two month and six month internships will be available on this portal, so that students can choose internship as per their studies and need. All selected interns will be given a scholarship of Rs 20,000 per month, which will help them learn and grow.

Under this programme, students will get an opportunity to understand how national highways are planned, constructed and implemented on the ground. This will give students experience in both technology and management.

Although the main focus of the program is on civil engineering students, it also has opportunities for IT, electronics and electrical engineering students. Especially there will be an opportunity to work in modern areas like advanced traffic management system and electronic toll collection.

About 250 students participated in the ‘Winter Internship’ started under this program. At the same time, around 500 applications have been received so far for the six-month final year internship.

This internship program is designed in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes on students to learn through experimentation, connect with industries and become employable. Under this policy, students also get points for internship along with studies.

According to the Ministry, this program will not be limited to mere observation, but the interns will directly participate in the projects and get real experience of technical and management related work related to the development of National Highways.
