New Delhi, October 8 (IANS). Sweden’s Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences today announced the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This announcement was made at around 3:15 pm. Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for the development of metal-organic frameworks”.
Susumu Kitagawa is at Kyoto University, Japan, Richard Robson is at the University of Melbourne, Australia and Yaghi is at the University of California, Berkeley, United States.
Scientists have discovered a new way to improve metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Frameworks are made of metal and organic materials and have small holes in them.
Which can be used to store gas, remove carbon dioxide from the air and help in chemical processes.
The award winners developed a new type of molecular structure. The structures they create – metal-organic frameworks – contain large holes through which molecules can flow in and out. Researchers have used them to collect water from desert air, remove pollutants from water, absorb carbon dioxide, and store hydrogen.
This discovery is mentioned in Nobel Prize.org. While explaining the details of this scientific discovery, the expert of the Academy said that these are such atoms/molecules which can fit in the hand bag of Harry Potter character Hermione Granger.
Chemistry Nobel is given every year to those scientists who have made discoveries that contribute to improving life or the environment.
According to Nobel Prize.org, the oldest scientist to be honored with this award in the field of chemistry was 97-year-old Goodenough. He received this honor in 2017. At the same time, 35-year-old Frederick Joliet received the Nobel in 1935 and became the youngest person in history to receive this honor.
The winner will receive 11 million Swedish krona (Rs 10.3 crore), gold medal and certificate. If more than one scientist wins, the prize money is divided among them. The awards will be given on December 10 in Stockholm.
