Seoul, October 23 (IANS). North Korea successfully tested two hypersonic projectiles on Thursday. Describing it as an important weapon system, he said that these state-of-the-art missiles strengthen North Korea’s war deterrence capability.
Earlier, information was given by South Korea that North Korea had fired two ballistic missiles. APEC summit is going to be held in South Korea next week. Before the summit, activity from North Korea seems to be increasing.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, “Two hypersonic missiles fired in a north-east direction from Ryokpho district of Pyongyang municipality hit the target point located on the Kwasang Peak plateau in Orang County, North Hamgyong Province.”
KCNA reported that the test conducted by the administration the previous day was part of a defense capability development programme. Its objective was to increase the stability and effectiveness of its strategic deterrence against enemies.
North Korea on Wednesday fired its first ballistic missiles at South Korea in five months.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected multiple short-range ballistic missiles fired north-east from Junghwa in North Hwanghae, south of North Korea, at about 8:10 a.m., according to Yonhap News Agency.
JCS said the missiles covered a range of about 350 kilometers. Along with this, officials are considering the possibility that these missiles were the same tactical ballistic missiles that North Korea tested in September 2024.
Sources believe that the missiles may have fallen in the inland area instead of the Eastern Sea. Earlier, North Korea had last fired short-range ballistic and cruise missiles towards the East Sea on May 8 and May 22.
The launch comes ahead of South Korea hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit from October 31 to November 1. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are going to visit South Korea for the APEC Summit.
