A new rule will be implemented in the country from March 1, 2026, which will make it mandatory to connect messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal to the SIM card. This means that you will not be able to use these apps without your original mobile SIM. According to reports, the government has clearly said that no relaxation will be given in this rule, and strict action will be taken against any app that does not follow it. This is clearly worrying WhatsApp users.

Attention WhatsApp Web users

According to the new rule, if you use WhatsApp Web or Telegram Web, you will have to log in again by scanning a QR code every six hours. Otherwise, your web session will be terminated. The government has said that this step is necessary to stop cyber fraud and fake accounts. Now, the app will only work on numbers whose SIM is actually in your phone.

Why is this rule being implemented?

This rule is considered necessary to prevent fraud caused by fake connection between mobile number and app, fake profile and phone scam. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has issued guidelines, under which OTT platforms will have to implement this rule within 90 days. The deadline has been fixed for March 1. The government says that this will make it easier to trace digital crimes and strengthen national security.

WhatsApp and Telegram will have to follow this rule

WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, is already working on a SIM-binding feature. This feature is already available in some beta versions, which asks users if the phone has the same active SIM card with which WhatsApp is registered. If no active SIM card is found, the app will run in limited mode or be closed until you insert and verify the correct SIM card. Similarly, Telegram and Signal will also have to include this check in their system.

Why are users scared?

This rule is new for the users. This may cause problems to many people:
If the SIM card is removed, WhatsApp may stop working.
This rule will also affect users living abroad, because they will have to insert an Indian SIM card in their phone every time. WhatsApp Web requires login every six hours, which can make daily tasks difficult.
Many people previously used the app by changing the SIM card; Now this will not be possible.

Security or privacy? Experts’ opinion

The government says that the purpose of this step is to increase digital security. This will help in dealing with fake accounts, fake numbers and fraud. Many cyber experts also say that SIM-binding will provide an extra layer of security. However, some privacy experts also believe that this may affect user privacy, especially while working or traveling abroad. However, the government has made it clear that this rule gives priority to security.

What should users do?

Keep the same SIM card number in your phone with which you registered the app.
If you change SIM cards frequently, authentication will now be required every time.
Stay logged in to WhatsApp Web or Telegram Web for six hours.
It is reported that this system will be implemented after March 1. If app companies are not able to implement it on time, they may have to face legal action, fine and even technical blocks. The government has said that this is a big step towards tackling digital fraud and deception, but it will also impact the everyday lives of users.
