Mumbai, December 18 (IANS). Digital transactions are increasing rapidly in India and now people are using it more in everyday shopping, especially at stores. Between July and September, there were 59.33 billion transactions through UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which is 33.5 percent more than last year.

Total transactions worth Rs 74.84 lakh crore took place during this period, which is 21 percent more than last year. This growth reflects the rapid growth of digital payments in the country.

According to Worldline India report, there are now 70.9 crore active UPI QR codes in India. This number has increased by 21 percent from July 2024 till now. The use of these QR codes has now reached grocery shops, medicine shops, bus-railway stations and villages. e

According to this report, UPI is now being used more for payments at shops (P2M – Person to Merchant). There has been a 35 percent increase in transactions at stores, which has reached 37.46 billion transactions. There has been an increase of 29 percent in transactions between people (P2P – person to person), which has reached 21.65 billion transactions.

However, if we look at the average amount of a transaction, it has come down to Rs 1,262, which was earlier Rs 1,363. This means that people are now using UPI more for small purchases like food, travel, medicines and other everyday items.

The report said that the number of Point of Sale (POS) machines in India has also increased. These machines have now increased by 35 percent to 12.12 million. However, there has been a slight decline in the number of Bharat QRs as people are now using UPI QR codes more. Along with this, there has also been a change in the transactions done through credit card and debit card. Credit card transactions have increased by 26 percent, while debit card transactions have decreased by 22 percent, as people are now using UPI more for small amount transactions.

Mobile and tap based payments are also increasing rapidly. Especially in cities and in services like metro, taxi, people are now preferring to make payment through mobile without swiping the card.

The use of UPI in India is likely to increase further in the coming times. According to the report, interoperable QR codes will be brought into common use in late 2025 and early 2026, allowing people to make payments with a single QR code at places like petrol pumps, hospitals, public services and travel.
