After dominating the foldable phone segment, Samsung is now experimenting with new things. The company is currently working on the design of slide and roll phones. Two patents have been filed in this regard, which give a glimpse of Samsung’s vision of a new mobile form factor. Let’s see what kind of phones Samsung can launch in the future.
A display that gets bigger when you slide it
The first patent shows the concept of a phone that at first glance looks like a normal smartphone; However, its display can be enlarged horizontally by sliding it. Unlike existing devices that fold or flip, this phone expands through a sliding mechanism, giving users more space for the display. After the job is done, the display can be slid back into place, making the device easy to transport like a normal phone.
The second concept is more interesting
Samsung’s second concept is particularly interesting. In this design, the display remains completely inside the body of the device. When pulled from either side of the device, the display pops out. Samsung says this design helps protect the large display from scratches and other types of damage. After use is complete, the display goes back inside the body of the device. The patent also states that the device will be equipped with sensors that will detect how much the display is protruding and how fast it is pulled. The phone’s software interface will then automatically adjust based on this data.
Will this phone ever reach the production stage?
So far, Samsung has only filed patents for these two designs, and there’s no guarantee they’ll ever reach the production stage. In fact, companies patent thousands of designs every year, yet very few of them progress beyond the concept or paper stage. Therefore, no one can say with confidence that Samsung will turn these patents into reality and bring these devices to market.
Samsung’s enthusiasm for this series
Samsung is showing a lot of interest in its series of rollable and sliding devices. The company’s display division has shown off prototypes of OLED screens that slide and roll into different locations. Looking at this, it can be understood that Samsung is working seriously on this series. If these phones reach the production stage, they can solve many of the problems associated with foldable phones.
