Mumbai, January 15 (IANS). Indian stock market’s main benchmarks NSE and BSE are closed on Thursday due to municipal elections in Maharashtra. Because of this, trading is not taking place in the domestic market today.

Earlier in a notification issued, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) had said that there will be no trading in equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives and electronic gold receipts on Thursday.

BSE also said that derivative contracts expiring on January 15, 2026, will now be considered to have expired a day earlier. These changes will be reflected in the contract mortar files at the end of the day.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) also informed that trading in the Capital Market and Futures and Options segments will remain closed on January 15.

This decision was taken because the Maharashtra government has declared January 15 as a public holiday. This holiday has been given to smoothly conduct elections in 29 municipal corporations of the state.

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also included in these elections. Trading will start again in NSE and BSE from Friday.

There was a lot of ups and downs in the domestic stock market on Wednesday, but in the end the markets closed with a decline. The main reason for this was the decline in IT and realty stocks, which weakened the confidence of investors.

Apart from this, there was pressure on the market due to increasing political tension in the world and uncertainty regarding India-US trade agreement.

The Sensex closed 0.29 per cent lower at 83,382.71, while the Nifty closed 0.26 per cent lower at 25,665.60.

Broader markets fared better than major indices. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index rose 0.67 percent, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index closed 0.29 percent higher.

Sector wise, more selling was seen in IT and realty shares. The Nifty IT index fell 1.08 percent, while the Nifty Realty index declined 0.92 percent.

According to experts, the market is being affected by continuous selling by foreign investors and uncertainties related to global politics and trade. For this reason investors are currently avoiding taking too much risk.

Analysts said that there was some hope in the beginning of the day, but strong momentum did not materialize. Due to uncertainty regarding the economic situation, investors are trading cautiously in selected stocks only.
