The advent of AI technology has made everyday tasks easier. However, companies require large data centers to keep this AI running. However, Earth’s limited power supply may prove inadequate for these data centers in the future. In view of this, global tech giants are now pinning their hopes on the Moon. Prominent names like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Sundar Pichai are considering building huge data centers on the Moon. These tech giants are moving towards implementing their plans rapidly. The reason is obvious: there is a shortage of electricity on Earth and there are many legal complexities involved in building new data centers. However, there is no such challenge on the Moon.

Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk’s plan
According to a report in Times of India, Jeff Bezos recently said that the Moon is a gift from the universe. His company Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are working to make space travel affordable. Bezos wants to build a large AI data center on the Moon. Google has also launched Project Suncatcher, which is preparing for computing on the Moon. Elon Musk is planning to run AI servers in space by putting solar power into Starlink satellites. These satellites will be able to transmit data among themselves rapidly using lasers. Musk’s dream is even bigger: He wants to build factories on the moon that build their own AI satellites and generate hundreds of terawatts of electricity annually.

AI data centers need plenty of power

Running AI models requires a lot of power. America has declared a power emergency. OpenAI says it needs 100 gigawatts of new electricity every year. Currently, companies are running gas turbines to ensure that training is not disrupted. Now, tech companies are talking hundreds of gigawatts and terawatts. Many countries together use this much electricity. Its supply is a big challenge.

Benefits of building a data center in space
There is sunlight 24 hours in space, due to which the risk of clouds or rain is avoided. Solar panels will always operate at full capacity. There is a vacuum, which means the heat will naturally escape. Cooling data centers costs a lot of money. Apart from this, there are no government rules and regulations. Companies can act as per their wish.

Sundar Pichai is also not behind in this race
Google CEO Sundar Pichai says the next generation AI will be trained on the moon. His company will launch two test satellites by 2027 to see how machine learning tools work in space. Pichai admits that this is a very difficult task, but necessary for the future of AI.

Experts say it is a profitable proposition
Building a data center in space used to cost a lot, but now the prices are falling rapidly. Former NASA scientist Phil Metzger says it will become a profitable proposition within 10 years. He believes that the pursuit of AI will bring the industry to space. What seems like a dream today will become reality tomorrow.
