Mumbai, March 30 (IANS). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday announced a plan to use data-based tools and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

He specifically mentioned the partnership with institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to help officials differentiate between legitimate residents and those living without valid documents in the city. These devices will be deployed after completion of testing.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Fadnavis announced a ‘Major War’ against drugs, particularly focusing on educational institutions. The state Director General of Police is developing a new strategy to keep premises across Maharashtra free from illegal substances.

Chief Minister Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, was talking to reporters after presiding over the biennial state police officers’ conference held in Mumbai.

He presented a comprehensive agenda for the security of the state, which emphasized eradication of Naxalism, inclusion of AI in policing and strict action against drug trafficking.

He announced the government’s efforts to have a completely digital legal process and gave a deadline of six months to the Director General of Police to digitalize the entire process from filing the first information report to filing of the charge sheet. Blockchain technology will be used to ensure the authenticity of the evidence.

The Criminal Investigation Department is entrusted with the task of analyzing cases of the last four to five years in which there has been no conviction. He further said that its objective is to identify the loopholes and increase the conviction rate of the state from the current 50 per cent to the target of 95 per cent.

The Chief Minister appreciated the sustained efforts of Maharashtra Police in almost completely eradicating Naxalism from the state. He paid tribute to the 244 policemen who lost their lives in this conflict.
