The US has issued new security advice for its ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This instruction issued on February 9, 2026 clearly states that American flagged commercial ships should stay as far away from Iran’s maritime border as possible. This decision has been taken after the ongoing talks between the two countries and the recent standoff in the sea. This new rule will remain in force till August 8, 2026 i.e. for the next 6 months.

What rules must ships follow?
The US Administration (MARAD) has instructed the captains to take their ships near the maritime border of Oman. Keeping security in mind, captains have been asked to remain in touch with NAVCENT and UK Maritime Trade Operations 24 hours a day.
Distance from Iran: Ships have been advised to stay away from Iranian waters and close to Oman. Denied boarding: If the Iranian military asks to board the ship, the captain must refuse unless it poses a threat to life. Do not resist: If Iranian soldiers force their way onto the ship, the crew is forbidden from fighting or resisting them. Keep tracking on: Ships must always keep their AIS tracking system on to ensure their location is known.
Why was this warning issued suddenly?
This advisory comes after an incident that occurred on February 3, 2026. That day, high-speed boats of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) harassed an American tanker ‘Stena Imperative’. Additionally, informal talks were held between the US and Iran in Oman on February 6. America has taken this step to strengthen security.
Direct impact on oil prices
As soon as this advisory came, there was an immediate jump in the prices of crude oil in the international market. The market fears that there may be disruption in supply. The prices of both Brent crude and WTI have increased.
