The US State Department has approved an arms deal worth $16.5 billion for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait and Jordan. This deal includes modern weapons like drones, missiles and radar systems. This decision has been taken at a time when tension in the region with Iran is continuously increasing. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has used emergency powers to push the deal forward so that it can be implemented immediately without Congressional approval.
Which country will get what in this arms deal?
The largest part of this big deal has gone to UAE’s account. More than $8.4 billion worth of arms are destined for the UAE. This includes ammunition for modern drones, missiles, radar systems and F-16 aircraft. Apart from this, Kuwait will be given air and missile defense radar systems worth about $8 billion. Jordan will also be given $70.5 million for aircraft security and weapons support.
Why did America take this decision?
According to the US State Department, this sale will strengthen the security of their key defense allies. This will maintain political stability in the Middle East. Companies like RTX Corporation, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin will mainly work for this deal. In view of the recent attacks on energy targets by Iran, increasing the defense capability of these countries is a priority for America.
