Sharat Chakraborty Mani, a 40-year-old Hindu man, was killed after he was attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants in Narsingdi near Dhaka on Monday night, according to Bangladesh-registered newspaper WeeklyBlitz.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the attack took place when Mani was running his grocery shop in Charsindoor market of Palash upazila. The attackers came suddenly and fled from the spot after attacking them with sharp weapons. According to local media reports, he suffered serious injuries and died on the way to hospital.
This incident is the sixth incident of murder of a Hindu person in Bangladesh in the last 18 days.
According to local media, on December 19, Mani wrote a post on Facebook expressing concern about violence in the country and describing his birthplace as a “valley of death”. Police are investigating this incident.
The murder follows the alleged murder of another Hindu man in Jessore on Monday. According to Prothom Alo report, an ice factory owner was shot dead in public in Monirampur area of Jessore.
According to local media, Rana Pratap Bairagi was the owner of an ice making factory in Kapaliya Bazaar of Monirampur and was working as the acting editor of ‘Dainik BD Khobor’, a newspaper published from Narail.
Three assailants riding a motorcycle called him out of the ice factory, took him to an alley and then shot him in the head at close range and fled. According to Prothom Alo’s report, Rana Pratap died on the spot.
Monirampur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Raziullah Khan told Prothom Alo that the body has been recovered and is being sent for post-mortem.
The police have not clarified the motive behind the murder and the investigation is ongoing.
Over the past few weeks, reports have emerged highlighting attacks being carried out by minority groups and increasing insecurity.
It is noteworthy that a recent tragic incident attracted national attention when Khokan Das, a Hindu man, died of his injuries after being burnt in a fire on New Year’s Eve.
The attackers allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, poured petrol on his body and set him on fire. In an attempt to save himself, Das jumped into a pond located on the roadside.
Hearing his screams, the local people rushed to the spot, forcing the attackers to flee. Locals rescued Das and first took him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, where he was given emergency treatment. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka. He later died from his injuries.
