In the presence of US President Donald Trump, Thailand and Cambodia on Sunday signed a document related to extending the ceasefire agreement.
Trump had helped broker a ceasefire in July this year by threatening to impose tariffs on both countries after border clashes that left dozens dead and thousands displaced.
Under the first phase of the agreement, Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners while Cambodia begins removing heavy weapons. Regional observers will monitor the situation to ensure that conflict does not reoccur.
“We did something that a lot of people said was not possible,” Trump said at a ceremony to extend the ceasefire agreement.
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet called it a historic day, while Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the agreement would lead to long-term peace.
Trump has come to Malaysia to participate in the annual conference of the Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Kuala Lumpur.
There has been a dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over the 800 km long border for decades, although before this there used to be sporadic conflicts between the two countries.
