The Kuwait government has tightened its campaign against drugs. Recently, a famous Kuwaiti actress Shujoun Al-Hajri has been arrested on charges of possession of narcotics and psychotropic substances. The Interior Ministry has confirmed this arrest and said that things like marijuana and cocaine have been recovered from them. After this incident, the discussion on new rules regarding drugs in Kuwait has intensified.

What is the provision of punishment in the new law?
Kuwait has implemented a new law (Amiri Decree-Law No. 59/2025) to stop narcotics. Under this law, drug smugglers can be given life imprisonment and in some serious cases, even death penalty. Along with this, a heavy fine ranging from 50,000 Kuwaiti Dinar to 20 lakh Kuwaiti Dinar can also be imposed on the culprits. Now possessing drugs even for personal use comes under the category of crime and can lead to a jail term of up to 10 years.
Important rules for travelers and migrants
Traveling with medicines has now become quite challenging for Indians and other expatriates visiting Kuwait. If you take any medicine regularly, you need to follow some special things:
Prescriptions and medicines must have written or electronic approval from Kuwaiti authorities before coming to Kuwait. Only 15 days’ supply of narcotics is allowed to be brought along. You can bring a maximum of one month’s supply of psychotropic medications, provided you have a certified prescription. If medicines are brought without approval, they can be confiscated at the airport and the passenger can be detained.
Strict attitude of officials
Officials of the Drug Control General Department have made it clear that now a policy of zero-tolerance will be adopted under the new law. If even small traces of drugs are found in a person’s body, it will be considered a criminal act. The government believes that narcotics are a major threat to society and health, therefore, security checks at Kuwait International Airport and other borders have been tightened.
