The second major meeting of the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) was held in Jeddah. The meeting was chaired by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Abdul Rahman Al-Fadli. Representatives from 31 countries participated in it and the United Kingdom was also involved. The main function of this meeting is to save the environment and make the degraded land suitable for farming or planting trees again. On this occasion, Saudi Arabia gave a message to the whole world to work together.

What major decisions were taken in the meeting?
Minister Al-Fadli said that four new countries have joined this campaign. These countries are Ghana, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka and Syria. With the arrival of these countries, the promise of planting a total of 22 billion trees has now been confirmed. Another important decision was taken during the meeting in which engineer Ibrahim Al-Turki was appointed as the new Secretary General of this initiative. This step has been taken so that coordination between all the countries can be improved and work can be expedited.
What is Saudi Arabia’s future plan?
Saudi Arabia has announced that a permanent secretariat of this initiative will be built in Riyadh. The entire cost of its running will be borne by the Saudi government for the next 10 years. Under the Saudi Green Initiative, 151 million or more than 15 crore trees have been planted in the country so far. 18% of Saudi Arabia’s land has now become protected forest area and a target has been set to increase it to 30% by 2030. Apart from this, work is also going on on reusing waste and improving the weather information system.
