New Delhi, December 7 (IANS). The pleasure of eating sweets, hot tea, coffee and paranthas in winter is different, but many people say that after eating sweets they suddenly start feeling dizzy, feel weak or their hands and legs start trembling, as if the body is giving some strange warning.

This may sound shocking, but it is quite common and a very interesting reaction of the body works behind it. When we eat too much sugar or eat high-carb food too often, glucose in the blood increases rapidly. The body perceives this as a dangerous situation and immediately releases too much insulin to reduce it. This sudden surge of insulin rapidly sends glucose into the cells and blood sugar starts falling. This rapid fall is called reactive hypoglycemia and this fall causes weakness, sweating, dizziness or restlessness.

The brain runs only on glucose. When sugar suddenly goes up and then comes down rapidly, the energy supplied to the brain fluctuates. The body tries to protect the brain, but this process takes some time. Due to this ‘signal gap’ we may experience blurred vision, fatigue, irritability or confusion. Additionally, as soon as sugar drops, the body releases adrenaline so that energy is available immediately. Adrenaline is the reason why hands start trembling, heart starts beating fast and sudden feeling of nervousness or restlessness occurs.

In some people this weakness also increases due to lack of water and minerals. When sugar increases, the body starts expelling excess glucose through urine. Along with this, sodium and potassium are also released, which causes heaviness and fatigue in the muscles. From the point of view of Ayurveda, this condition is considered to be a sign of slow fire and increase in phlegm.

According to Ayurveda, when food is not digested properly or Kapha increases in the body, problems like heaviness, sleepiness, lethargy, and sudden fatigue emerge, and sweet and high-carb food further aggravates these conditions.

If this weakness is mild and gets cured within a few minutes, then generally it is a normal reaction of the body, but if after eating sweets again and again, there is dizziness, fainting sensation, excessive increase in heartbeat, sweating or nervousness very fast, then it may be a sign that the body is not able to handle glucose properly. In such a situation, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
