Chandigarh. Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora said that Mahindra & Mahindra is one of the leading multinational groups of India, which has established its strong identity in the fields of automotive, agricultural equipment, financial services, construction and technology. The Group has extensive experience and reputation in developing globally competitive industrial platforms and is one of India’s largest mobility solutions manufacturers with operations spanning domestic and international markets. He further said that Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has acquired 58.96 per cent stake in SML Isuzu Ltd for about Rs 555 crore through purchase of shares from Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors. Following the completion of the transaction in August 2025, the company’s board was reconstituted and the firm is being named SML Mahindra Limited. He emphasized that SML Mahindra Limited is a leading manufacturer of Light and Medium Commercial Vehicles (LCV/MCV) in India with a strong position in manufacturing trucks, buses and special-purpose vehicles catering to the needs of logistics, passenger transport and institutional mobility segments.
The company has already made a major investment of approximately Rs 500 crore in its manufacturing unit located at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Punjab. The unit is a fully integrated automobile manufacturing complex consisting of vehicle assembly lines, body shop, paint shop, press and machine shop, FRP shop and a dedicated bus body plant.
Regarding expansion plans in Punjab, Vinod Sahay, Executive Chairman, SML Mahindra Limited was quoted as saying that the company has prepared an important roadmap for expanding its operations in Punjab. This includes an investment of Rs 100 crore for modernization and upgradation of the existing manufacturing facility and a proposed investment of Rs 400 crore by shifting a manufacturing unit from another state to Punjab.
Industries and Commerce Minister Sanjeev Arora said that Punjab is emerging as one of the best investment destinations in the country. Expressing confidence in the development journey of Punjab, he said that under the dynamic leadership of National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state is fast becoming the most preferred destination for investment in the country.
He emphasized that Punjab’s investor-friendly governance, transparent policies, timely approvals, strong industrial infrastructure and skilled workforce are instilling new confidence in leading industrial houses.
The Cabinet Minister also proudly said that Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has deep roots in Ludhiana, Punjab, reflecting the deep historical and entrepreneurial ties between the Mahindra Group, one of the country’s most prestigious industrial families, and the state. He said that this longstanding relationship further strengthens Punjab’s association with innovation, entrepreneurship and industrial excellence.
Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora further said that SML-Mahindra’s growing presence in Punjab is a testament to the strong support of the state’s pro-industry ecosystem. He assured Punjab Government’s active support and full cooperation through single-window system for every future expansion and investment of Mahindra Group.
