A major accident has come to light in Plateau State of Nigeria. Here, 37 people have lost their lives due to poisonous gas leaking inside a mine, while 26 others have been admitted to the hospital in critical condition. According to the police, this incident occurred at around 5:45 am on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Most of those who died included youth aged 20 to 35 who had gone to the mines to earn their livelihood.

Which poisonous gases caused death?
Initial investigation by police and mining experts has revealed that there was no proper way for air to flow inside the mine. Due to this, some dangerous gases had accumulated deep there. Experts said that these gases were mainly responsible for the accident:

Experts say that such gases often come out during excavation in old or closed mines. The people working there had no idea that there was a gas leak and they became victims of it.
