The Government of India has issued new strict instructions for the airlines, giving great relief to the air passengers. According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, now at least 60 percent seats in domestic flights will have to be given to passengers without any extra charge. This new rule will be implemented with effect from March 18, 2026, which will reduce the burden on passengers’ pockets.

What benefits will passengers get from the new rules?
Now passengers will not have to pay huge fees to airlines to choose their desired seats because 60 percent of the seats will be in the free category. Passengers and families traveling on the same PNR will now be given seats together so that they do not have to sit separately. Currently, airlines offer only 20 percent seats without any charge, which has now been increased to 60 percent. Airlines will now have to make transparent rules for carrying sports equipment, musical instruments and pets.
Government’s emphasis on passenger rights and transparency
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu has clarified that passenger convenience is the top priority of the government. DGCA has directed that in case of flight cancellation or delay, passengers’ rights should be strictly enforced. All airlines will also have to provide information on passenger facilities and rights in regional languages on their websites, mobile apps and airport counters. This will make the air travel experience for the common man more pleasant and transparent than before.
