If you have an account in State Bank of India (SBI) and you have to go to the branch for any banking related work, then you should do this work immediately, because the country’s largest bank is going to remain closed for six days. From May 23, 2026, SBI branches will remain closed for six days; This closure is expected to take place across the country. However, online banking services will continue without any interruption, allowing you to use services like net banking, ATM, mobile banking and other digital platforms. But, if you need someone’s help to complete any transaction or work by visiting an SBI branch, then you should ensure that the work is completed before May 23.

Why will SBI remain closed for six days?

There are several reasons behind the bank being closed for six days, including the weekend, a proposed two-day strike, and the two-day holiday declared by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid). According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks in Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed for two days – May 27 and 28 – on the occasion of Bakrid.

Bank accounts can also be switched like mobile networks

May 23 is the fourth Saturday of the month, which is a fixed holiday for banks, due to which banks remain closed on this day. Apart from this, since May 24 is a Sunday, all the branches of SBI will remain closed, making this special week a two-day weekend.

When and why is the strike happening?

SBI Staff Federation has announced a proposed strike on May 25-26, 2026 (Monday and Tuesday). The strike has been called to raise and resolve issues such as the recruitment process and selection of fund managers for the National Pension System (NPS). The ‘All India State Bank of India Staff Federation’ – the largest body representing SBI employees across the country – has also expressed its concerns on outsourcing of jobs, equity issues in SBI, review of career progression plans, Human Resource Management System (HRMS) and many other issues impacting employees.

Eid-ul-Azha holiday

RBI has announced a holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. In some parts of the country, this festival will be celebrated on 27th May, while in other areas it will be celebrated on 28th May. This festival will be celebrated on both days in Jammu and Kashmir; Due to which there will be two days holiday in this area.

Online services will continue

SBI employees can also join this strike. Due to this, work in bank branches may come to a halt; However, online services will continue without any interruption. SBI’s online banking, UPI payment and ATM services will continue to operate as usual.
