Caracas. Venezuela’s Earthquake Research Institute (Funvisis) said on Saturday that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake was felt in the central part of the country. This earthquake has come at a time when people are already scared after two large and destructive earthquakes that occurred earlier this week. According to the organization, the epicenter of this new earthquake was about 35 kilometers west of La Guaira, a major port city in the central coastal area. The city was declared a disaster-hit area after two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday caused extensive damage. Officials said that Saturday’s earthquake was just five kilometers below the ground. Earthquakes with such shallow depths are often felt more strongly and the risk of damage to buildings increases.
People in Caracas and surrounding areas also felt the tremors. Many people came out of buildings out of fear, fearing further damage or buildings collapsing. This earthquake occurred just a few days after two major earthquakes that occurred on Wednesday, which caused massive destruction in many places. Many buildings collapsed, landslides occurred and people also died.
Officials are busy handling relief and rescue operations. Rescue teams are trying to reach people trapped in coastal and mountainous areas.
Funavis said Saturday’s quake was not very large, but its shallow depth and already weakened buildings raised concerns. Experts say that aftershocks are common after major earthquakes and can cause further damage to weak structures.
The local administration has appealed to people living in high-risk areas to be alert and follow safety rules. Emergency services have been put on alert and teams are checking essential facilities like hospitals, bridges and power systems.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, the government has also appealed for international help.
Earthquake experts are constantly monitoring the situation and Funvisys is monitoring 24 hours. The organization asked people to trust only official information and not spread rumors that could increase fear and panic.
