Chennai, February 19 (). Afghanistan ended the T20 World Cup 2026 with a resounding victory. Afghanistan defeated Canada by 82 runs in the 39th match of the tournament played at M Chidambaram ground on Thursday. With the victory, Afghanistan also bid farewell to the team’s head coach Jonathan Trott. Captain Rashid Khan said after the match that Trott had done a lot for Afghanistan cricket and his separation from the team is a very emotional moment.
After the win against Canada, Rashid praised the coach a lot. He said, “It has been an amazing journey with Jonathan Trott in the last four or four-and-a-half years. He has done a lot for Afghanistan cricket. He has played an important role in taking the team to this stage. It is a very emotional moment to see Trott leave the team like this, but that is life. You can never be together forever. We want to wish him all the best for the future and hope to meet him again.”
Regarding Afghanistan’s journey in the tournament, Rashid said, “We came fully prepared and we played excellent cricket in the tournament. According to me, the defeat in the match played against South Africa pushed us on the back foot and also hurt us the most. We knew that to control our destiny in the World Cup, we had to win one of the first two matches. However, this is how the tournament works.”
Rashid further said, “There were a lot of positive things for us from this tournament, with which we would like to move forward and come back stronger in the next ICC event. However, there are some things we need to improve. Especially the performance of our middle-order batsmen against big teams and bowling in the last overs.”
Out of 4 matches played in the group stage, Afghanistan won 2, while the team had to face defeat in 2 matches.
