Chandigarh. The state government has taken another big and visionary step towards making the urban transport system in Haryana modern, smart and sustainable. The government is seriously mulling over the possibilities of implementing the state-of-the-art Pod Taxi (Glideways) system in cities, which is expected to usher in a new era of smart mobility in the state. In this series, a high level delegation of Japan’s reputed company Suzuki Motor Corporation and Glideways Company paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at Sant Kabir Kutir in Chandigarh on Wednesday. During the meeting, various aspects of possible partnership between Haryana Government and Japanese companies on Glideways Transit Project were discussed in detail. Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini said that the Haryana government is committed to developing world-class infrastructure in the state and providing better transport facilities to the citizens.
Important points like feasibility of starting pod taxi service, possible corridor and route planning, investment model for the project, possibilities of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and timeline for its implementation were discussed in the meeting. Through this project, the comprehensive changes in the city’s traffic system and the facilities provided to the citizens were also assessed.
The delegation explained through the presentation that Glideways is a state-of-the-art, automated (diverless) and on-demand public transportation system, which is being developed with advanced technology. This system provides passengers with a fast, safe and convenient travel experience through small automated pods. Its objective is to reduce the increasing traffic pressure in urban areas, reduce travel time and provide an environment-friendly transport option.
It is noteworthy that to speed up the development of cities, support will be provided by the Government of India under new initiatives to promote urban infrastructure and attract more investment under the ‘Urban Challenge Fund’. This project will not only improve traffic management but will also play an important role in energy efficiency and reduction in carbon emissions. The system has been designed keeping in mind the future smart city requirements, making it in line with the goals of long-term and sustainable development.
Chief Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Rajesh Khullar, Commissioner and Secretary of Urban Local Bodies Department Ashok Kumar Meena, Director Shashwat, Advisor to CM’s Foreign Cooperation Department Pawan Chaudhary, Kento Ogura from Suzuki Motor Corporation, Chris Riley, Dave Manu and Alberto Fernandez Lopez from Glideways Company were present in the meeting.
