Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule introduced the Right to Disconnect Bill, 2025 in Parliament on Friday. It is proposed to create an Employee Welfare Authority so that every employee has the right to be disconnected from work-related phone calls and emails after working hours and during holidays. This bill was introduced under the private member bill category. Members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are allowed to introduce bills on subjects on which they feel the government should make laws. Except in a few cases, most private member’s bills are withdrawn after the government responds to the proposed legislation.
Right to refuse work-related calls after office hours
If this bill is passed, it will benefit salaried employees who are often troubled with work-related emails and calls even after office hours. The bill will give employees the right to refuse to respond to calls and emails outside working hours and resolve all related issues.
Demand for paid menstrual leave
Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya also introduced another bill in the House. The Menstrual Benefits Bill, 2024, relates to providing certain facilities at the workplace to women working during periods.
Shambhavi Choudhary (LJP) also introduced a bill to secure the right to paid menstrual leave for working women and girl students, along with several other benefits and facilities during periods.
Other Private Member Bills
NEET exemption bill by Congress MP: Congress MP Manickam Tagore introduced a bill to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET for admission to undergraduate medical courses. The Tamil Nadu government has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court on this issue against the President not approving the proposed law.
Bill to abolish death penalty: DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi introduced a bill to abolish death penalty in the country. This demand has been raised earlier also, but central governments have rejected it considering it a necessary restriction in some cases. Journalists Protection Bill: Independent MP Vishaldada Prakashbapu Patil introduced the Journalists (Prevention of Violence and Protection) Bill, 2024. Its purpose is to stop violence against journalists and ensure their safety.
