Severe cold and dense fog have severely affected daily life in North India. Schools have been closed in many states of North India due to cold weather. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the health and safety of children. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), severe cold is expected in North India in the coming days. Rain is also expected in many states including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Where and for how long will schools remain closed?
How long will schools remain closed in Delhi-NCR?
Schools are closed in the national capital Delhi from January 1. One week winter holidays have started. Similarly, in view of the increasing pollution, dense fog and severe cold in Gautam Buddha Nagar, an order has been issued to close all the schools in the district for four days. Schools from nursery to class 12 will remain closed till January 1, 2026.

Schools closed in UP till January 1
Due to severe cold in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered all schools in the state to be closed till January 1. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of children in cold weather. All schools up to class 12 across all boards – ICSE, CBSE and UP Board – will remain closed till January 1.

Schools will open in Patna after January 1
An order has been issued to close schools up to class eight in Patna, the capital of Bihar. In the order, instructions have been given to keep all government and private schools closed from December 31 to January 2. All schools and Anganwadi centers are included in this order. To ensure that studies are not completely disrupted, the timing of classes above class VIII has been changed; These classes will now be held from 10 am to 3:30 pm.

Schools closed for a week in Guwahati
Due to severe cold in Guwahati, all schools in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam have been closed for a week. IMD has predicted light rain and light to moderate fog in parts of Assam till Thursday morning. “In view of the cold wave, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration has directed all government and other schools to remain closed from December 31, 2025 to January 6, 2026,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a social media post on Tuesday night.

Schools closed in Punjab till 7 January
In view of the continuously increasing cold and fog in the state, and keeping in mind the health and safety of children and staff, holidays have been declared in all government, aided, recognized and private schools in the state till January 7.

Schools closed in Ranchi till 31 January
Due to the continuously increasing cold and cold wave in Jharkhand, all government, non-government and private schools in Ranchi district have been closed from December 27 to December 31. During this period, classes from KG to class 12th will remain suspended.
