New Delhi, December 16 (IANS). Periods are a natural and necessary physical process in women’s lives, but the pain that comes with it sometimes makes everyday life difficult. Problems like stomach cramps, back pain, fatigue, irritability and heaviness are common. Ayurveda links it to the imbalance of Vata dosha in the body, while according to science, this pain is caused by a chemical called prostaglandin produced in the uterus, which contracts the muscles.

In such a situation, this pain can be reduced to a great extent by adopting some easy habits.

If the day is started with warm water during periods, the body gets immediate relief. In Ayurveda, hot water is considered to strengthen Agni i.e. digestive power. Drinking a glass of warm water as soon as you wake up in the morning removes the cold accumulated inside the body and the muscles of the uterus gradually start opening. Science also believes that hot water improves blood circulation, which reduces stiffness in the stomach. This reduces swelling and the pain gradually starts reducing. Herbal tea is also beneficial in this.

The way of bathing also affects the pain of periods. Taking a bath with cold water can cause the muscles to contract further, which increases the pain. Taking bath with lukewarm or hot water provides relief to the body. When hot water falls on the stomach and waist, it acts as a natural compress. In Ayurveda it is called Swedan, i.e. removing stiffness from the body. According to science, warm water soothes the nerves and reduces pain.

Morning breakfast becomes very important during periods. At this time the body needs extra energy and nutrition. If breakfast is light but nutritious, then problems like weakness and dizziness are reduced. In Ayurveda, such food is recommended which gives strength to the body and is easily digested. Bananas, dry fruits, seeds and green vegetables fulfill the deficiency of essential elements in the body. According to science, magnesium and potassium help in relaxing muscles, thereby reducing cramps. Fruits and natural foods also reduce inflammation.

Light exercise or yoga proves beneficial for the body during periods. It is said in Ayurveda that Vata dosha remains balanced by yoga. Doing a few minutes of stretching or easy yoga in the morning increases blood flow in the abdominal muscles. Science also believes that light exercise releases a hormone called endorphin, which is the body’s natural pain reliever. This makes the mind light and the body relaxed.

Fomentation is an old but very effective method for treating period pain. Placing a hot water bottle or hot water bag on the stomach provides instant relief. Ayurveda considers it as external heat therapy, which opens the stiffness inside. According to science, heat dilates veins and increases blood flow, which reduces pain-causing chemicals.
