Diabetes is a chronic and life threatening disease. When the body’s ability to produce insulin decreases or when it stops producing insulin, the level of glucose in the blood starts to rise. High level of sugar in the blood is called hyperglycaemia. The effect of increasing sugar is also seen on other parts of the body. There are two types of diabetes type-1 and type-2 diabetes. The effect of increasing both types of diabetes can be seen on the heart, kidney and other parts of the body.
Diabetes is difficult to control for patients with type 1 diabetes. They have to take insulin two to four times a day to control the sugar. If the level of sugar in the blood of type-1 and type-2 diabetes patients starts increasing, then doctors recommend taking insulin to control it. Let us know when diabetic patients need to take insulin.
When diabetic patients should take insulin: When the level of sugar in the blood of diabetic patients becomes high, basal insulin is given after meals or in between meals to maintain the insulin level. The function of basal insulin is to maintain blood glucose levels. Often this insulin is used to control when the patient’s sugar rises during the fast.
Whenever a person fasts, at that time the liver removes glucose, which goes into the body through our blood cells. Basal insulin works to keep this glucose level under control. According to health experts, when the sugar does not come down in spite of lifestyle changes, controlling diet and taking medicines, then the patient is advised to take insulin.
There are four types of insulin
1- Short Acting Insulin – Its effect starts very fast in 30-36 minutes. This insulin is effective for 6-8 hours.
2- Intermediateacting insulin acts slowly. Its effect remains in the body for 10-14 hours.
3- Log acting insulin remains effective only for 24 hours. Acting insulin can be used three times a day. If you are using log acting insulin
Use once a day before sleeping.
4-Combination of insulin which is made by mixing all.
