A war of words has erupted between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. Speaking on the codeine syrup issue on Monday, the UP CM targeted Akhilesh and his colleague Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi. UP CM termed these leaders as “two specimens”.

Chief Minister Yogi said, “There are two models within the country. One sits in Delhi and the other in Lucknow. As soon as there is any discussion in the country, they immediately leave the country, and I think the same is happening with your ‘Babua’. He will also leave the country again to travel to England, and you people will keep making noise here.”

In response, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav urged leaders to maintain public decorum and then twisted the issue by claiming that BJP members should not bring their party’s internal disputes on the public platform.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister told the state Assembly that there have been no deaths in the state due to codeine-based cough syrup and stressed that the matter is being investigated strictly under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Addressing the House, the Chief Minister said, “There has been no death due to codeine cough syrup in Uttar Pradesh. Second, action will be taken in this matter under the NDPS Act. The Uttar Pradesh government has won this case in the court. Third, the largest wholesaler in Uttar Pradesh, who was first arrested by the STF, was issued a license by the Samajwadi Party in 2016.” Giving details of the action taken so far, Yogi Adityanath said that the government has registered 79 cases in this matter, named 225 accused and arrested 78 people. He further said that raids have been conducted on 134 firms.

He said, “The government has registered 79 cases so far. 225 accused have been named in these cases. 78 accused have been arrested so far. 134 firms have been raided.” “The High Court has ruled that this entire matter should be prosecuted under the NDPS Act. The Uttar Pradesh government fought this battle and won.”

Giving a stern warning to those involved in the case, the Chief Minister said that the government will ensure strict action against all the accused. “No accused will be able to escape in this case. And don’t worry, when the time comes, preparations will be made to run the bulldozers. Then don’t complain,” he said.
