New Delhi. Sharjeel Imam, accused in the riots that took place in the country’s national capital Delhi in 2020, has filed an application in the court for interim bail. Expressing his desire to contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, Sharjeel has sought interim bail for 14 days from October 15 to October 29 from the Karkardooma court. In the petition filed by Sharjeel, it has been said that he wants to contest the elections as an independent candidate from Bahadurganj seat. Sharjeel cited his right to participate in the democratic process in his interim bail plea filed before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai. Sharjeel’s application is likely to be heard tomorrow i.e. Tuesday.
On September 2 last month, Delhi High Court had rejected Sharjeel’s petition seeking regular bail. After this, Sharjeel had filed an application in the Supreme Court where his appeal is currently pending. Although many cases are registered against Sharjeel related to protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the most important one is the case of conspiring for Delhi riots. Delhi Police has registered a case against Sharjeel under several serious sections under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Sharjeel’s lawyer says that he has been in jail for more than 5 years and has not been released on bail under any circumstances. In the application, Sharjeel Imam has been described as a political prisoner and student activist. Let us tell you that Sharjeel Imam was arrested on January 28 from Kako police station area of Jehanabad. Sharjeel’s family lives in Patna, the capital of Bihar and his father Akbar Imam was a JDU leader. Voting is to be held in two phases in Bihar on 6th and 11th November.
