Mamata Banerjee started her political journey during her college days and at a very young age she became the General Secretary of Mahila Congress (the women’s wing of the Congress Party). He surprised everyone during the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, when he defeated CPI(M) veteran Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur constituency. With this historic victory, she became the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in the country at that time.
Mamta Banerjee created her own path
Mamata Banerjee was a part of the Congress Party for a long time and also worked as a Union Minister in the Central Government. However, differences gradually began to emerge between him and his party over West Bengal politics and methods of opposing the CPI(M). He felt that the Congress Party was not competing properly in Bengal. Ultimately, he left the Congress in 1997 and founded his own party—the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC)—on January 1, 1998.
