Guwahati, February 21 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the BJP is ready to contest the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats in the state, which will go to polls on March 16, while preparations are underway to chalk out a strategy for the third vacant seat as well.
Sarma said that BJP has already decided to give party tickets for the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats and will soon complete the internal process of finalizing the candidates.
He said that the party will keep a close eye on the strategies of the opposition parties before taking a final decision on contesting the third vacant seat.
The Chief Minister said, “BJP will prepare its tactics to contest the elections on the third vacant seat also. However, the final decision on that will be taken after seeing the strategy of the opposition parties.”
Sarma further said that the state unit of BJP will prepare a panel of names of three candidates and send it to the party’s central leadership in New Delhi for approval.
He said that the process of shortlisting the names is currently going on within the organization.
According to the Chief Minister, BJP state president Dilip Saikia will send the list of shortlisted candidates to the official central leadership for consideration and final clearance.
“As per party rules, the state unit will recommend a panel of names, and the central leadership will take the final decision,” Sarma said. The Chief Minister also indicated that the BJP is confident of its numbers in the Assam Assembly, which plays a crucial role in the Rajya Sabha elections.
He said the party would conduct the elections in a planned and disciplined manner, keeping in mind both organizational interests and the broader political situation of the state. Elections for Rajya Sabha seats from Assam are to be held on March 16.
Political activities have intensified in the state in recent times, with both the ruling BJP and opposition parties holding internal discussions and consultations ahead of the elections.
With the BJP-led alliance having a comfortable majority in the Assembly, the ruling party is expected to win two seats, while the contest for the remaining seats will depend on opposition unity and strategy.
